The Imagine Institute is driving meaningful change in early learning across Washington State- but it’s the strength of provider relationships that truly brings that mission to life. One powerful example is Maria Muñoz, a licensed provider whose journey into child care was inspired by her deep passion for supporting children and strengthened by the guidance of a trusted mentor. We took some time to meet with Maria to learn more about her experiences with child care and Imagine U.
MEET MARIA
Based in the Tri-Cities, Maria has worked in child care for over 14 years. She now operates Maitas Child Care LLC, balancing her career with being a mother to two daughters. She recently completed her AA in Early Childhood Education and is currently pursuing her BA in Education.
“I see the opportunity to build strong foundations with children, and to have the ability to teach them small but meaningful things like supporting one another. Making positive connections with children is what inspired me.”
Her career took a positive turn when she was introduced to Imagine U by her mentor Amparo Yoguez Rubio. Maria says she and Amparo worked together at another child care center for years, until Amparo told Maria about how easy it was to become a licensed provider using the tools the Imagine Institute offers.
“I liked Imagine because it provides various types of support in different areas of early childhood education. I see that they offer a lot of support to early childhood educators such as ongoing training for providers, educational resources for working with young children, as well as help with running their businesses, accounting, marketing, and more.”
BECOMING A MENTOR
Armed with the tools she found with Imagine, Maria decided to take the next step. She saw an opportunity to help her community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“What motivated me to become an early learning provider was the need I saw during the pandemic—there were families that needed to go to work but had nowhere to leave their children.”
Since opening her program, Maria has paid it forward. She now mentors new providers through the Imagine U program, helping them navigate the challenges of licensing and business ownership with the same support she once received.
“I’m here to continue learning and also to keep supporting others in whatever is needed—whether it’s with the intern program, substitutes, Shared Services, or any training I’m qualified to provide in support of early learning educators, or anyone interested in joining the Imagine Institute’s programs.”
Maria says she would not be where she is today without the help of her mentor, and the resources and support provided by Imagine. She says she will keep mentoring as long as it helps people achieve their goals.
“It brings me joy to know that someone is achieving their goal. I believe I have a supportive spirit toward others. I’ve also received help from others, so I see this as a way to give back to my community. I feel committed to helping them succeed.”
MARIA’S IMPACT
Maria is passionate about child care and about helping others through the Imagine U mentorship program. We recently spoke to just a few of her interns, and they were all very appreciative of the time and attention Maria shared with them.
“Throughout my journey, Maria was by my side at all times. As some new providers will come to realize, starting a business is not easy and requires a good amount of capital. I’m grateful to my mentor for making extra equipment available to her interns so that, as new providers, we could begin while working toward having the necessary funds to purchase our own equipment—such as chairs, tables, beds, bookshelves, etc.” – Aura Muñoz

Any question or doubt I had, she was there willing to answer kindly, patiently, and always ready to help… Thanks to her, I was able to get my license in a short period of time because she was such a great help. ABOUT IMAGINE U
Imagine U is a relationship-based mentorship program designed to increase the number of licensed family child care providers who can care for children in Washington State. Imagine U pairs experienced and talented licensed child care providers with those interested in becoming licensed, and offers both the mentor and intern supports to help them grow professionally. This peer-to-peer model honors the knowledge and skill that exists in the field and helps ensure that new providers are able to benefit from their mentor’s expertise.

CONOCE A MARIA
María, vive en Tri-Cities, y ha trabajado en el cuidado infantil durante más de 14 años. Ahora dirige Maitas Child Care LLC y equilibra su carrera con la de ser madre de dos hijas. Recientemente completó su título de Asociado (AA) en Educación Infantil y actualmente está trabajando en su Licenciatura (BA) en Educación.
“Veo la oportunidad de construir bases sólidas con los niños y tener la capacidad de enseñarles cosas pequeñas pero significativas, como apoyarse unos a otros. Hacer conexiones positivas con los niños es lo que me inspiró.”
Su carrera dio un giro positivo cuando su mentora, Amparo Yoguez Rubio, le presentó Imagine U. María comenta que ella y Amparo trabajaron juntas en otra guardería durante años, hasta que Amparo le contó lo fácil que fue obtener la licencia de cuidadora con las herramientas que ofrece el Instituto Imagine.
“Me gustó Imagine porque ofrece diversos tipos de apoyo en diferentes áreas de la educación infantil. Ofrecen mucho apoyo a los educadores de la primera infancia, como capacitación continua para proveedores, recursos educativos para trabajar con niños pequeños y ayuda con la gestión de sus negocios, contabilidad, marketing y más.”
INICIANDO SU PROPIO NEGOCIO
Armada con las herramientas que encontró con Imagine, María decidió dar el siguiente paso. Vio la oportunidad de ayudar a su comunidad durante la pandemia de COVID-19.
“Lo que me motivó a convertirme en proveedor de aprendizaje temprano fue la necesidad que vi durante la pandemia: había familias que necesitaban ir a trabajar pero no tenían dónde dejar a sus hijos.”
Desde que abrió su programa, María ha contribuido positivamente. Ahora es mentora de nuevas proveedoras a través del programa Imagine U, ayudándolas a enfrentar los desafíos del proceso de obtención de licencia y manejo de su propio negocio con el mismo acompañamiento que ella recibió en su momento.
“Estoy aquí para seguir aprendiendo y también para seguir apoyando a otros en lo que sea necesario, ya sea con el programa de internas, sustitutos, Servicios Compartidos o cualquier capacitación que esté calificado para brindar en apoyo a educadores de aprendizaje temprano o cualquier persona interesada en unirse a los programas del Imagine Institute.”
María dice que no estaría donde está hoy sin la ayuda de su mentor y los recursos y el apoyo brindados por Imagine. Ella dice que seguirá siendo mentora siempre que ayude a las personas a alcanzar sus objetivos.
“Me llena de alegría saber que alguien está logrando su objetivo. Creo que tengo un espíritu de apoyo hacia los demás. También he recibido ayuda de otros, así que lo veo como una forma de aportar a mi comunidad. Me siento comprometido a ayudarlos a tener éxito.”
EL IMPACTO DE MARÍA
A María le apasiona el cuidado infantil y ayudar a otros a través del programa de mentoria con Imagine U. Recientemente hablamos con algunos de sus internas y todos apreciaron mucho el tiempo y la atención que María compartió con ellos.
“Durante mi trayectoria, María estuvo a mi lado en todo momento. Como algunos proveedores nuevos se darán cuenta, iniciar un negocio no es fácil y requiere una buena cantidad de capital. Estoy agradecida con mi mentora por poner a disposición de sus internas equipo adicional, lo que nos permitió, como nuevas proveedoras, comenzar mientras trabajábamos para reunir los fondos necesarios para comprar nuestro propio equipo—como sillas, mesas, camas, estanterías, etc.” – Aura Muñoz
“Siempre estuvo atenta a mis necesidades como interna. Cualquier pregunta o duda que tuviera ella estuvo ahí dispuesta a responder con amabilidad, paciencia y siempre dispuesta a ayudar… Gracias a ella pude obtener mi licencia en un corto período de tiempo porque fue de gran ayuda. Además, durante mis horas con ella, noté que es muy paciente con los niños, muy dedicada a su trabajo, y los niños la quieren y respetan mucho. Sin duda, fue una experiencia muy hermosa trabajar con ella.” – Anyuly Acevedo
