June is Pride Month, and it’s a good opportunity to celebrate inclusion and equality with your kids. There are several activities to help kids understand what Pride is about and to promote the spirit of inclusion and representation. We have gathered a few ideas we think you’ll enjoy.
Create a Rainbow Collage – Start by grabbing a big piece of paper and using crayons to draw a rainbow right in the center. Then find scraps of colored paper, stickers, glitter, thin wood pieces, and pipe cleaners, and have kids glue or tape them onto the corresponding colors of the rainbow. They can add as many pieces as they want to fill the rainbow. Then you can hang the finished product on the wall for everyone to see. ( https://minni.space/blog/2021/06/01/rainbow-collage )
Make a Pride Self-Portrait – One of the ways to celebrate Pride is by recognizing self-worth and self-appreciation. Having kids make a self-portrait helps them figure out their unique style, features, and personal identity. You can use paint, clay, crayons, or even markers to have them create their self-portrait. Kids may also want to share and describe the choices in their self-portraits before displaying them. ( https://www.teachingexpertise.com/arts-and-crafts/self-portrait-ideas/ )
Hold a Rainbow Scavenger Hunt – A rainbow, the symbol of Pride, is a great tool for teaching children about inclusion and diversity. Hide things around the room or in the backyard that represent one of the colors of the rainbow and have the kids hunt for them before creating a rainbow out of the items. Find a Pride Event Near You – Many Pride events take place in Washington and not just in June. Check out local calendars and talk to your community about what they are doing for Pride. There are opportunities to take kids to family-friendly events like parades, festivals in the park, and street fairs, all with Pride Month themes and designed to be inclusive and fun.
