Holiday Activities for Kids

There is a lot going on this time of year, and it’s important to help kids celebrate the different winter holidays. Whether they celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanza, making an activity for the holiday is a good way to help kids celebrate, and learn about the different days people observe. Here are just a few ideas to get kids interested and involved this time of year.

New Year Resolutions List –

This can be something you do with kids that is easy and makes them think about the year ahead. Type or write out a few headlines on a sheet of paper with lines below for kids to write in. The topics can be “things I am looking forward to,” or new things I want to try,” or anything else you want them to write about. Then, they can write out their answers themselves, or you and write it for them, and they can keep it handy all year to see if they followed their goals. Make a Kwanza Paper Necklace –

Whether you celebrate Kwanza or not, this is a great way to get kids thinking and involved. Cut out strips of green, red, and black construction paper to represent the colors of Kwanza. Then, have kids loop the paper together into connecting circles to form a chain. They can write words on the paper beforehand, or even draw pictures to celebrate the holiday. It’s a simple craft, but a thoughtful one. ( https://www.freekidscrafts.com/kwanzaa-chain/ )

Make a Paper Plate Menorah –

This is a good way to learn about Hannukah, whether the kids celebrate it or not. Cut a paper plate in half, and then cut strips of construction paper about a half inch wide or so to represent the candles. Then cut out a tiny circle or teardrop shape out of yellow construction paper to represent the flame, and glue it on top of the candles. After you have the pieces cut out, kids can then glue or tape the candles onto the cut half of the paper plate to look like a menorah. This can be just a menorah, or you can add in a few lessons about Hannukah as you go along. Up to you. Either way, it’s a crafty way to introduce them to the holiday.
