JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for direction and overall supervision of a group of toddler or preschool children. Performs activities that ensure the safety, involvement, and creativity of each individual in the group. Works cooperatively with the lead teacher to discuss and aid in the implementation of daily plans in accordance with the current curriculum, incorporating the Washington State Department of Children Youth & Families (DCYF) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Assistant teachers help lead teachers and implement developmentally appropriate programs in center or family home early learning programs. Accrued Paid Time Off / Sick Time / as well as 4+ weeks of scheduled paid time off.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
Work with teaching team in all activities, including but not limited to: housekeeping, diapering, toilet training and meal service and record keeping
Share responsibility in the preparation of Daily Plans and the preparation of teaching materials
Conduct daily small-group activities for an assigned group of children, sharing responsibility for large-group activities and using appropriate adult/child interactions strategies with all children
Assume responsibility for a classroom at any given time
Collects required anecdotes and information for required ongoing assessments
Observe and/or participate in parent-teacher conferences
Provide coverage for breaks for other staff members
Supervise daily meal and playground activities, field trips and walks
Promote individualized attention for children by freeing teachers from routine duties
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Be at least eighteen years old;
Have a high school diploma or equivalent;
Have an ECE initial certificate or equivalent by August 1, 2026, or within five years of being hired or promoted into this position, whichever occurs later;
Complete the applicable pre-service requirements, pursuant to WAC 110-300-0105;
A Preschool CDA credential or an Associate Degree or higher in Early Childhood Education is preferred.
Must attend training classes designed to broaden professionalism, education and skill involving child care and development as required by Federal and State regulations and Administration.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must possess personal attributes needed to develop trusting relationships with children and adults. Such attributes include the following:
Interactions expressive of genuine warmth and concern for children as well as an understanding of their developmental needs
Respect for children’s ideas, feelings, abilities and differences
Insights into and tolerance for the range of age appropriate behavior
Ability to assume needed duties and responsibilities without supervision
Ability to use discretion in communications with parents in the Teacher ‘s absence
Ability to move and react quickly and to handle emergencies effectively
Ability to abide by all rules and regulations applicable to workers at JSL
Ability to accept changes in schedules, environment, etc…
Acquire knowledge of the current curriculum and implement the curriculum practices in the classroom
(a) An assistant teacher must meet the following qualifications:
(b) Assistant teachers may work alone with children with regular, scheduled, and documented oversight and on-the-job classroom training from the classroom’s assigned lead teacher who is primarily responsible for the care of the same group of children for the majority of their day.
(c) For continuity of care, assistant teachers can act as a substitute lead teacher for up to two weeks. If longer than two weeks, the provider must notify the department with a plan to manage the classroom.

Be able to engage with students to develop and deliver programming that is developmentally appropriate and integrates hands-on activities and learning, following the interest of the students;
Encourage active exploration and investigation; promote curiosity; guide and facilitate growth and development
Prioritize and support students’ social emotional growth, which takes many forms, but most importantly, require someone who can model positive conflict resolution, behavior management, effective coping skills, calmness and problem solving abilities
Keep the safety of children at the forefront of each decision, action and interaction
Attend to basic needs including feeding, dressing and diapering as applicable
Requirements Include:
Team player, a self-starter and one who demonstrates good judgment and communication skills, is kind and easy going
Patient and flexible in working with kids, have a sense of humor
The ability to create community by engaging with parents and their children
Willing and prepared to work outdoors in all types of weather, year round
Flexible work hours. Shifts will include occasional evenings and weekends. Hours are full-time
Detail-oriented and organized: Excellent oral/written communication skills are needed. Complete student feedback sheets for each shift, for each child
An AA in ECE or related field is preferred AND two years of experience leading projects, activities and outdoor education for diverse audiences
Adhere to all JSL policies and procedures
Must be able to pass and maintain clear DEL criminal background check
1-2 years child-related experience (toddler/preschool/Pre-K teaching experience).
Current certification in CPR and First Aid, or willingness to obtain.
Equivalent education/experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration
Valid Driver’s License | ability to occasionally operate a 15 passenger van
Knowledge/Experience with: Potty training ; diaper changing ; standing diaper changing
Excellent Work Ethic and commitment to job requirements and time and attendance policies

The Assistant Preschool Teacher, under the guidance of the Lead Preschool Teacher, assists the Lead Preschool Teacher in delivering specialized early learning services through a trauma-informed care approach and providing parent support and advocacy to children and families experiencing challenges in their lives.Essential Functions:
