One of the most powerful parts of the Imagine U program at the Imagine Institute is the meaningful, lasting relationships built between mentors and interns. Through our peer-based mentorship model, new early learning providers are paired with experienced mentors who understand the journey firsthand. Amparo Yoguez Rubio is one of our mentors who has made a lasting impact on many interns over the years. We spoke with Amparo to learn more about her story— what inspires her, what she’s learned, and why she’s so passionate about mentoring others.
MEET AMPARO
Amparo lives in Pasco, Washington with her husband and three children, where she runs Ruby’s123 Child Care. Her path to early learning began when she moved to Washington and started working for the Migrant Council as a bus monitor. While working with the Migrant Council, Amparo learned about the Imagine U program.
“What most interested me in starting my child care business was the opportunity to serve others—especially the most vulnerable, which are the children. I worked at the center as a bus monitor. From there, I became a home care aide for a child with special needs for seven years. A friend who worked with me at the center knew about the Imagine U program and recommended it to me.”
Amparo’s love for children was clear early on.
“I have been in early learning and child care for fifteen years. What motivated me to become a provider was my love for children. When I was young, my greatest dream was to study to become a kindergarten teacher.”
FROM INTERN TO LICENSED PROVIDER
Amparo joined the Imagine U as an intern, where she worked towards licensure and officially launched her own child care business. Her past experiences had prepared her well—but Imagine U gave her the tools she needed to succeed as a business owner.
“What I liked most about the program is that they gave me the resources to obtain my license and, even now, they continue to provide training. Through the resources they provided, I earned the initial certificate and the short certificate. I’m still studying at Seattle College to obtain my associate’s degree.”
Becoming a Mentor
After becoming licensed, Amparo wanted to help others start their own child care business. She joined Imagine U again, this time as a mentor, so she could share her knowledge and experience to support new providers in their journey.
“What inspires me to work in child care is knowing that I can make a difference in a child’s life—being an important part of their development and supporting their families. I enjoy helping other providers start this work because I love sharing my knowledge and supporting others in starting their own businesses.”
“It’s a team effort. I work with other mentors in the community to support interns, providing different perspectives in maximizing their success in opening their new programs. We’re still in touch with several of them and continue supporting each other. We have maintained a great relationship to this day.”
AMPARO’S LASTING IMPACT
Amparo’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. She’s helped 8 providers become licensed. We heard from several of her former interns, all of whom shared heartfelt reflections on how her mentorship helped them succeed:

ABOUT IMAGINE U
Imagine U is a relationship-based mentorship program designed to increase the number of licensed family child care providers who can care for children in Washington State. Imagine U pairs experienced and talented licensed child care providers with those interested in becoming licensed, and offers both the mentor and intern supports to help them grow professionally. This peer-to-peer model honors the knowledge and skill that exists in the field and helps ensure that new providers are able to benefit from their mentor’s expertise.

CONOCE A AMPARO
Amparo vive en Pasco, Washington, con su esposo y sus tres hijos, donde dirige Ruby’s123 Child Care. Su camino hacia la educación temprana comenzó cuando se mudó a Washington y empezó a trabajar para el Consejo de Migrantes como monitora de autobús. Mientras trabajaba con el Consejo de Migrantes, Amparo conoció el programa Imagine U.

“Lo que más me interesó al iniciar mi negocio de cuidado infantil fue la oportunidad de servir a los demás, especialmente a los más vulnerables, que son los niños. Trabajé en el centro como monitora de autobús. A partir de ahí, me convertí durante siete años en ayudante de atención domiciliaria para un niño con necesidades especiales. Una amiga que trabajaba conmigo en el centro conocía el programa Imagine U y me lo recomendó.”
El amor de Amparo por los niños quedó claro desde el principio.
“He trabajado en educación temprana y cuidado infantil durante quince años. Lo que me motivó a convertirme en proveedora fue mi amor por los niños. Cuando era joven, mi mayor sueño era estudiar para ser maestra de jardín de infantes.”
DE INTERNA A PROVEEDORA LICENCIADA
Amparo se unió a Imagine U como interna, donde trabajó para obtener su licencia y lanzó oficialmente su propio negocio de cuidado infantil. Sus experiencias pasadas la habían preparado bien, pero Imagine U le brindó las herramientas que necesitaba para tener éxito como propietaria de un negocio.
“Lo que más me gustó del programa es que me brindaron los recursos para obtener mi licencia y, aún hoy, siguen brindándome capacitación. Gracias a los recursos que me proporcionaron, obtuve el certificado inicial y el certificado corto. Todavía estoy estudiando en Seattle College para obtener mi título de asociado.”
CONVERTIRSE EN UNA MENTORA
La guardería de Amparo juega con burbujas afuera.
Tras obtener su licencia, Amparo quiso ayudar a otros a empezar su propio negocio de cuidado infantil. Se unió de nuevo a Imagine U, esta vez como mentora, para compartir sus conocimientos y experiencia y apoyar a los nuevos proveedores en su camino.
“Lo que me inspira a trabajar en el cuidado infantil es saber que puedo marcar la diferencia en la vida de un niño, siendo una parte importante de su desarrollo y apoyando a sus familias. Disfruto ayudando a otros proveedores a empezar este trabajo porque me encanta compartir mis conocimientos y apoyar a otros a empezar sus propios negocios.”
“Es un trabajo en equipo. Trabajo con otros mentores de la comunidad para apoyar a los internos, brindándoles diferentes perspectivas para maximizar su éxito al abrir sus nuevos programas. Todavía estamos en contacto con varios de ellos y seguimos apoyándonos mutuamente. Hemos mantenido una gran relación hasta el día de hoy.”
EL IMPACTO DURADERO DE AMPARO
La dedicación de Amparo no ha pasado desapercibida. Ella ha ayudado a 8 proveedores a obtener su licencia. Escuchamos a varios de sus internos en el pasado, quienes compartieron sentidas reflexiones sobre cómo su mentoría los ayudó a tener éxito:
