The calendar has now flipped over into the Spring season, meaning it’s time to create some fun crafts and activities with your kids. It’s the time of year when kids start to go outside more, learn about nature, and have fun. Here are a few ideas to get kids excited about the Spring season.
Make a Bird Feeder – This may seem like a lot of work, but it’s actually an easy way to get kids interested in birds. First, cut an apple in half and cut out the core. Then spread peanut butter along the cut side. Add birdseed to the peanut butter, making sure it sticks. You can also put the whole thing into the refrigerator for about an hour to make sure it stays on. Then, take some twine and tie it around the apple stem. You can use a wire if the stem is broken. Next, hang your apple onto a nearby tree so kids can watch all the birds as they swoop in for a snack.

Spring Flower Activity – Getting kids interested in flowers may not be too hard around springtime. This activity will get them interested in the outdoors and help their motor skills. First, get a colander, or strainer, from the kitchen and turn it upside down on the table. Next, gather some real or fake flowers and have kids put the stems through the holes in the colander. They can make a bouquet out of them, pick color patterns, and even learn the flower names as they go.

Make a Nature Collage – Spring is a great time to take kids out on a walk or have them play in the backyard. Next time they go out, have them collect things they find like flowers, bark, pinecones, or even soil, and then bring them back inside. Next, take a piece of cardboard and have kids glue on their nature collections onto the cardboard in a colorful pattern. They can learn the names of what they are gluing and make an artful decoration in the process.

Color Scavenger Hunt – Take a big piece of cardboard and paint color blocks, about an inch apart, on the cardboard. These will be the colors the kids are looking for. Then, take clothespins and attach them to each color. When the kids find a leaf, flowers, or bark that matches the color, they can pin it to the corresponding color. The first kid to find items for every color wins!
