Today is the last day of Black History Month, but we can celebrate Black history, culture, and lives every day.

Renata Bryant, Community and Advocacy Specialist at Imagine, put together a playlist of music by Black artists, with a mix of songs for littles and their caregivers. Here are a few highlights from the last six decades for your next dance party:

“Uptight (Everything’s Alright)” by Stevie Wonder (1967) – This is one of Motown great Stevie Wonder’s first hits. The bass beat and big, bright trumpets will get everyone up and moving.

“What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye (1971) – Gaye was already a famous singer when he recorded the song – but it took his music in a bold new direction. The sweetly sung lyrics protest police brutality, violence, and the Vietnam War.

“How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston (1985) – Superstar Whitney Houston jumped onto the pop scene with this happy and danceable song, one of three #1 hits from her first album.

“Jumpin’ Jumpin’” by Destiny’s Child (1999) – Everyone’s heard of Beyoncé today, but don’t forget her earlier work with Destiny’s Child. Kids don’t need to understand the lyrics about the club to have fun jumping and bouncing along.

“Kick Push” by Lupe Fiasco (2006) – This lyrical rap tells the story of a kid who has loved skateboarding since he was 6 years old.

“River” by Leon Bridges (2015) – Bridges honors the traditions of Black spirituals and gospel music with this beautiful song featuring a  multilayered mix of acoustic guitar and tambourines with a full choir.

“lightbeamers” by FKA Twigs (2022) – One of the newest artists on the playlist, FKA Twigs experiments with elements of pop, electronica, R&B and more.
