This week, we are thrilled to highlight Irma Acosta, who runs a family home child care business and a child care center in Brewster, Washington.
MEET IRMA
Irma Acosta’s years of dedication to child care have made her a leader in her community.
She has run her family home child care business, Happy Faces Daycare, for 20 years. In September 2023, she opened Bilingual Child Care Center as well.
Her work has helped keep her area from being considered a child care desert.

HELPING CHILD CARE PROVIDERS
Irma has been a Mentor and guide to many other child care providers in her community. As a Mentor for Imagine U, the Imagine Institute’s relationship-based mentorship program, she helps Interns learn how to run their business, including completing their licensing paperwork and preparing their child care space.
She is a state-approved trainer and offers training through the Imagine Institute, including Child Care Basics in Spanish. She also teaches CPR training in Spanish for child care centers.
“I’m so happy to help everybody. When they need me, if I can, I help.”
MEETING FAMILIES’ NEEDS
Irma works hard to make sure her child care businesses meet the needs of families in her area.
In 2014, she began studying to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in early childhood education from Goddard College in Seattle. Her goal was to use her education and experience to help children who have disabilities.
In 2022, she received a $360,000 grant to achieve her dream and open Bilingual Child Care Center, which welcomes children with disabilities.
Irma is a native Spanish speaker, as are many people in her community. Happy Faces and Bilingual Child Care Center staff members teach children in English and Spanish.
Irma’s businesses also offer flexible schedules. They’re open seven days a week with hours from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. which allows people who work outside of typical business hours to find the child care they need.
“I understand the families when they change their schedules and their work. I want to do something different from other providers.”
More than anything else, Irma loves working with children. She’s proud when children she cared for when they were young grow up to enjoy school and get good grades.
“Everything is for the children.”

AYUDANDO A LOS PROVEEDORES DE CUIDADO INFANTIL
Irma ha sido mentora y guía para muchos otros proveedores de cuidado infantil en su comunidad. Como mentora de Imagine U, el programa de tutoría basado en las relaciones del Imagine Institute, ayuda a los pasantes a aprender a administrar sus negocios, lo que incluye completar la documentación para obtener la licencia y preparar su espacio de cuidado infantil.
Es una entrenadora aprobada por el estado y ofrece capacitación a través del Imagine Institute, que incluye información básica sobre el cuidado infantil en español. También imparte cursos de RCP en español para guarderías.

SATISFACER LAS NECESIDADES DE LAS FAMILIAS
Irma trabaja arduamente para asegurarse de que sus negocios de cuidado infantil satisfagan las necesidades de las familias de su área.

«Comprendo a las familias cuando cambian sus horarios y su trabajo. Quiero hacer algo diferente a lo que hacen otros proveedores».
Más que cualquier otra cosa, a Irma le encanta trabajar con niños. Se enorgullece cuando los niños a los que cuidó cuando eran pequeños crecen para disfrutar de la escuela y sacar buenas notas.
